Community Spotlight: Galveston County ESD #2 Serving Bolivar Peninsula

When you think about living in Crystal Beach and on the Bolivar Peninsula, the beach, Gulf views and coastal lifestyle probably come to mind first. But an important part of our community is the network of people and organizations working behind the scenes to help protect residents, property, businesses and visitors.

This month, our Community Spotlight recognizes Galveston County Emergency Services District #2 (GCESD #2) and the first responders serving the Bolivar Peninsula.

What Is Galveston County ESD #2?

An Emergency Services District, commonly called an ESD, is a local government entity created to provide fire protection and/or emergency medical services within a designated area.

Galveston County ESD #2 serves the Bolivar Peninsula and provides funding for medical emergency services and our three local volunteer fire departments:

Crystal Beach Volunteer Fire Department
Port Bolivar Volunteer Fire Department
High Island Volunteer Fire Department

Emergency Services Matter on the Bolivar Peninsula

Living in a coastal community creates some challenges that are different from those in a typical residential neighborhood.

The Bolivar Peninsula stretches for miles, and our population can increase significantly during weekends, holidays, summer vacation and major events.

Then there is the weather.

Hurricanes, tropical storms, flooding and other severe weather make emergency preparedness especially important for anyone who lives, owns property or operates a business here.

Having emergency medical services and local volunteer fire departments serving the peninsula provides an important resource for both our year-round community and the visitors who come here throughout the year.

Hurricane and Emergency Preparedness

Emergency preparedness is especially important when you own property on the Texas Gulf Coast.

In addition to our local ESD and first responders, the Galveston County Office of Emergency Management is an important resource for residents and property owners.

The county provides emergency information and resources related to severe weather, hurricanes, evacuations and other emergencies affecting Galveston County.

If you own a home, vacation property or rental property in Crystal Beach or elsewhere on Bolivar Peninsula, it is a good idea to know where to find official information before an emergency occurs.

More Than a Beach Community

One of the things I appreciate about the Bolivar Peninsula is that there is much more to this area than what visitors see during a weekend at the beach.

There are people volunteering their time, responding to emergencies, preparing for storms and helping take care of the communities that stretch from Port Bolivar through Crystal Beach, Gilchrist and High Island.

Many of those efforts happen quietly in the background.
